PCO 1881 vs. PCO 1810: Which Neck Finish Is the Better Choice?

When selecting a PET bottle for water, soft drinks, sparkling beverages, or other beverage applications, the bottle itself is only part of the equation. The neck finish plays an equally important role.

Two of the most recognized neck finishes in the beverage packaging industry are PCO 1810 and PCO 1881. At first glance, they look remarkably similar. Both are commonly associated with 28 mm beverage closures, and both have been widely used throughout the PET packaging industry.

Look a little closer, however, and there are some important differences.

PCO 1881 was developed as a lighter and shorter alternative to the traditional PCO 1810 finish. The change may appear small, but when millions of bottles are being manufactured every year, removing even a little more than one gram of plastic from each bottle neck can have a significant impact on resin consumption, transportation, production costs, and overall packaging weight.

So, what exactly is the difference between PCO 1810 and PCO 1881? And more importantly, which one should you choose for your PET bottle?

What Does PCO Mean in PET Packaging?

PCO is a standardized neck-finish system widely used for PET beverage bottles, particularly bottles designed for water, soft drinks, sparkling beverages, and other applications requiring a secure threaded closure.

The purpose of a standardized neck finish is simple: the bottle and closure need to work together as one packaging system. A neck finish determines important characteristics such as:

  • Neck diameter

  • Thread profile

  • Thread pitch

  • Thread engagement

  • Neck height

  • Sealing surface

  • Tamper-evident closure compatibility


Maintaining these dimensions within precise tolerances allows the closure to engage correctly with the bottle neck and create a reliable seal. This becomes particularly important with carbonated beverages. Carbon dioxide creates internal pressure inside the bottle, meaning the neck finish and closure must work together to maintain carbonation and prevent leakage throughout filling, transportation, storage, and consumer use. Among the most established 28 mm beverage neck finishes are PCO 1810 and PCO 1881.

What Is PCO 1810?

PCO 1810 is the traditional 28 mm beverage neck finish that has been used extensively throughout the global beverage industry. It has a relatively tall neck profile with longer thread engagement and a heavier neck structure. A typical PCO 1810 finish has a neck height of approximately 21 mm and a finish weight of approximately 5.06 grams, although exact specifications can vary depending on the applicable standard, preform design, and manufacturer.

Because PCO 1810 has existed for many years, a substantial amount of legacy beverage manufacturing equipment was originally designed around this finish. For companies operating established production lines, this can be important. Changing the neck finish may involve much more than simply purchasing a different preform. Bottle handling, blow moulding, filling, capping, conveying, closure specifications, and change parts may all need to be evaluated before making a transition.

What Is PCO 1881?

PCO 1881 is a lightweight 28 mm beverage neck finish developed to reduce the amount of plastic required in the bottle neck and closure system while maintaining the performance required for beverage packaging. The most noticeable difference is its height.

A typical PCO 1881 finish is approximately 17 mm high, compared with approximately 21 mm for PCO 1810. That makes the 1881 finish approximately 4 mm shorter. The shorter neck, modified thread geometry, and optimized support structure significantly reduce the amount of PET required to manufacture the neck finish.

A typical PCO 1881 finish weighs approximately 3.81 grams, compared with approximately 5.06 grams for PCO 1810. That represents a reduction of approximately 1.25 grams of PET per bottle neck, or almost 25% of the finish weight. One gram may not sound significant.

Multiply it by a million bottles, however, and the difference becomes substantial.

PCO 1810 vs. PCO 1881: Specification Comparison

Although both are commonly referred to as 28 mm beverage finishes, PCO 1810 and PCO 1881 are not identical.

Important: These values are provided as a general comparison. Actual dimensions and weights can vary depending on the applicable specification, preform design, closure system, and manufacturer. Bottle and closure drawings should always be verified before commercial production.

The Biggest Difference: Lightweighting

The development of PCO 1881 is a great example of lightweighting in PET packaging. Lightweighting means reducing the amount of material used in a package while maintaining the performance required for its intended application. Instead of reducing material from the bottle body alone, engineers redesigned the neck finish itself. The result was a shorter and lighter neck.

Consider a production program of 10 million bottles per year. At an approximate difference of 1.25 grams per finish, transitioning from a 5.06 g PCO 1810 finish to a 3.81 g PCO 1881 finish could theoretically eliminate approximately 12,500 kg of PET per 10 million bottles. That is approximately 12.5 metric tons of PET removed from the packaging system before considering any additional lightweighting that may be possible in the closure. For high-volume beverage manufacturers, those savings can become significant.

Why Is PCO 1881 Shorter?

The shorter profile of PCO 1881 is intentional. The objective was to reduce unnecessary material from the neck while maintaining the functionality required from the bottle-and-closure system. Compared with PCO 1810, the 1881 design uses:

  • A shorter neck profile

  • Reduced thread travel

  • Different thread geometry

  • A lighter support structure

  • Less PET in the finished neck


The closure can also be designed with less material, allowing manufacturers to reduce the total weight of the bottle-and-cap combination. This can contribute to lower resin consumption and reduced packaging weight across the supply chain.

Does a Lighter Neck Mean a Weaker Bottle?

Not necessarily. This is an important distinction. PCO 1881 uses less material, but that does not mean that a properly engineered 1881 bottle is unsuitable for demanding beverage applications. The finish was specifically developed for beverage packaging and is widely associated with applications where reliable sealing and pressure performance are essential. However, reducing material means that process control becomes extremely important.

The neck finish of a PET preform is already injection moulded to its final dimensions before the bottle enters the stretch blow moulding machine. Unlike the body of the preform, the neck is not supposed to stretch during blowing. Excessive heat around the neck area can therefore create dimensional problems. Manufacturers need to carefully control factors such as:

  • Preform heating

  • Oven temperature

  • Neck cooling

  • Preform handling

  • Transfer systems

  • Blow mould setup

  • Filling-line handling

Precise manufacturing becomes increasingly important as packaging becomes lighter.

Production Differences Between PCO 1810 and PCO 1881

Switching from PCO 1810 to PCO 1881 should not be treated as simply changing one preform for another. The two finishes have different geometries, heights, support-ring configurations, and closure requirements. Depending on the production line, a conversion may require evaluation or modification of:

  • Preform handling systems

  • Blow moulding equipment

  • Neck guides

  • Star wheels

  • Transfer systems

  • Filling equipment

  • Capping equipment

  • Cap chutes

  • Closure specifications

  • Conveying systems


Modern beverage lines may already support PCO 1881 or may require relatively straightforward change parts. Older lines originally configured around PCO 1810 may require more extensive modifications. This is why equipment compatibility should always be reviewed before changing neck finishes.

Closure Compatibility Is Critical

One of the most common mistakes in plastic packaging is assuming that two closures are interchangeable simply because both neck finishes are described as 28 mm. They are not necessarily interchangeable. The diameter is only one component of a neck finish. Thread geometry, thread engagement, sealing surfaces, tamper-evident features, closure height, and application torque all contribute to the performance of the complete package. A closure should therefore be selected and validated specifically for the intended neck finish. Before commercial production, manufacturers should verify:

  • Bottle and closure drawings

  • Thread compatibility

  • Application torque

  • Removal torque

  • Tamper-evident band performance

  • Seal integrity

  • Pressure performance where applicable

  • Filling-line compatibility


A cap that appears to fit is not the same as a properly engineered bottle-and-closure system.

Advantages of PCO 1881

For new beverage projects, PCO 1881 offers several important advantages.

The shorter neck uses less resin than the traditional PCO 1810 design. At high production volumes, even a small reduction in material per bottle can translate into substantial annual resin savings.

PCO 1881 has become an important neck finish across modern beverage packaging and is commonly used for applications such as:

Less resin per bottle can reduce material costs. For a small production run, the difference may appear insignificant. At millions or tens of millions of bottles annually, the economics can look very different.

Why Is PCO 1810 Still Used?

If PCO 1881 is lighter, why hasn't PCO 1810 disappeared? The answer is simple: Packaging decisions are not made based on bottle weight alone. There are still many situations where PCO 1810 makes perfect commercial and operational sense.

  • Existing Production Equipment

A beverage manufacturer may already have an entire production line configured for PCO 1810. If that equipment is operating reliably, the cost of converting the line may outweigh the immediate resin savings from changing neck finishes.

  • Existing Closure Supply

Companies may already have established closure suppliers, inventory, specifications, testing procedures, and quality systems built around PCO 1810. Changing the neck finish could require requalification of the entire bottle-and-closure system.

  • Existing Bottle Portfolio

A company with multiple bottle sizes using the same PCO 1810 finish may benefit from maintaining one standardized closure platform across its product range.

  • Proven Performance

PCO 1810 has a long history in beverage packaging. For established products and production lines, there may simply be no compelling operational reason to change a system that already performs reliably.

PCO 1881 vs. PCO 1810: Which One Is Better?

There is no universal answer. For a new high-volume beverage project, PCO 1881 will often be an attractive choice because it provides a lighter neck finish, lower material consumption, and a modern platform for beverage packaging. For an existing production line already designed around PCO 1810, continuing with 1810 may be the more economical and practical solution. The correct question is therefore not, Which neck finish is better? It is, Which neck finish is better for your product, closure, equipment, production volume, and supply chain? That distinction matters.

When Should You Choose PCO 1881?

PCO 1881 may be the better option when:

  • You are developing a new beverage bottle.

  • Lightweighting is an important objective.

  • Annual production volumes are high.

  • Reducing PET consumption is a priority.

  • Your filling and capping equipment supports the 1881 finish.

  • Compatible closures are readily available.

  • You are designing a new packaging platform rather than maintaining legacy equipment.


When Should You Choose PCO 1810?

PCO 1810 may remain the better option when:

  • Your existing filling line is configured for 1810.

  • Converting equipment would require significant investment.

  • You have an established closure supply chain based on 1810.

  • Existing bottles across your portfolio already use the finish.

  • Maintaining compatibility with current equipment and packaging components is more valuable than incremental lightweighting.


In either case, the decision should be based on the complete packaging system, not the preform alone.

Don't Choose the Preform Without Considering the Cap

A PET bottle, preform, and closure should never be evaluated independently. They function as a system. A properly designed packaging program considers:

Preform + Bottle + Neck Finish + Closure + Filling Line + Product

Changing one component can affect several others. For example, moving from PCO 1810 to PCO 1881 may reduce PET consumption, but those savings need to be evaluated against potential investments in closures, tooling, change parts, filling equipment, or line modifications. This is particularly important for companies transitioning from an established bottle supplier or introducing a new beverage platform.

The Bottom Line

PCO 1810 and PCO 1881 are both proven neck finishes used throughout the beverage packaging industry. PCO 1810 represents the traditional, taller beverage finish that continues to serve many established production lines. PCO 1881 takes a different approach. By shortening and lightweighting the neck finish, it reduces the amount of PET required for every bottle while maintaining the functionality expected from a modern beverage packaging system. For new projects, the material efficiency of PCO 1881 can make it particularly attractive. For existing operations, however, the economics of switching need to account for much more than resin savings.
